What are Soap
Nuts?
Before the
discovery of cleaning chemicals, soap nuts are used as cleaning detergent in
many parts of the world.
Soap nuts
are less like a nut and more like berry looking fruits that grew on the tree, Sapindus Mukorrosi. The outer shell of
the fruit contains a natural layer of Saponin and will form mild foam or suds,
just like detergent, upon contact with water. Similar to the chemical cleaning
agent, soap nuts are effective in removing dirt, grime and oil, making it
suitable for laundry. What’s more, it has antibacterial properties.
The
‘manufacturing’ process is simply to harvest the fruits and dry them – truly a cleaning
agent that originates straight from the trees! Since they are fruits, after
their cleaning ability is over, they are biodegradable and ideal for
composting.
Being
100% natural, using soap nuts is gentle on your skin and especially essential
for people who are allergic to strong chemicals in detergent. Non-toxic,
non-allergenic and anti-microbial, sensitive skin or eczema conditions will
improve with use of soap nuts.
Using Soap
Nuts for laundry
For a full
load of laundry, put 5 soap nuts into the wash bag provided (for loads lesser
than full, proportion the dosage accordingly). If clothes feel stiff after
washing, use less shell the next wash (stiffness will disappear after the next
wash so do not worry about it).
For best
results, activate the soap nuts by soaking the wash bag in hot water for 5
minutes.
Toss the
activated nuts into your washing machine and begin to load your laundry as
usual.
Each bag of
nuts is good for about 4-6 washes. You can tell that the lifespan of the nuts
are over if they no longer produce suds (or foam) upon contact with water.
Another sign would be soft, squishy shells.
Tip:
1)
To prolong the lifespan of soap nuts, remove
wash bag before sending clothes to the dryer.
2)
Adding essential oil to laundry during loading
gives fresh smelling clothes
